How to choose a high-quality omega-3 supplement without getting overwhelmed

Many people searching online for advice – such as asking “What’s the best brand for omega-3?” – often feel confused by the sheer number of products available. Instead of focusing on brands, understanding the criteria that define a high-quality omega-3 supplement can make the process far simpler.

A key step is examining EPA and DHA levels, the primary active fatty acids in omega-3 oils. High-quality supplements clearly list EPA and DHA content and often use concentrated oils with higher purity.¹ Labels should list actual EPA and DHA amounts per serving, as discrepancies between labelled and actual content have been found in multiple products.²

Purity is another core factor. Independent testing for contaminants such as heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins is widely recommended, with many reputable manufacturers using third-party labs or certification programs.³ Sustainable fish sourcing, confirmed through certifications such as MSC or similar programs, also provides assurance of responsible harvesting.¹

Oxidation control is essential for maintaining omega-3 quality. EPA and DHA are highly prone to oxidation, which can lead to rancidity. Industry guidelines emphasise the importance of managing exposure to heat, light and oxygen during processing and storage.⁴ Freshness testing – such as measuring peroxide and anisidine values – is routinely used to ensure oils meet strict oxidation standards.⁴

Understanding stability also means checking packaging. Light-blocking, airtight containers and the use of antioxidants such as tocopherols can help maintain oil freshness.³ Some guidance suggests that bulk oils with peroxide values below specific thresholds (e.g., <3) offer better end-of-shelf-life stability.⁴

Finally, transparency matters. High-quality products often provide Certificates of Analysis on request, detailing EPA/DHA levels, oxidation markers and contaminant results.¹ A supplement that shares clear, verifiable information is generally easier to trust than one with vague or incomplete labelling.

By focusing on these evidence-informed criteria – EPA/DHA content, purity, sustainability, oxidation control and clear manufacturing transparency – consumers can confidently navigate the omega-3 category without feeling overwhelmed.
